Specific Transition Planning for Military Families:

At Southport Elementary, we understand the importance of a smooth transition for military families. Our enrollment team, consisting of the Registrar, Guidance Counselor, and Administrative staff, works collaboratively to ensure a seamless transition process. We prioritize individual needs and concerns, making exhaustive efforts to address the specific requirements of each student.

Sharon Stewart, Assistant Principal and a former Military Child herself, serves as the Military Point of Contact and is readily available to assist military families. You can reach her at 850-767-1636.

Specific Academic Planning for Military Families:

We take academic planning for military families seriously. Upon arrival, student records undergo thorough scrutiny to identify any additional supports necessary for academic success. If a student requires further educational assistance, our team convenes to assess how Southport can enhance the existing academic plan, ensuring that each student reaches their full potential.

What resources and educational opportunities do you offer for military children?

Southport Elementary takes immense pride in fostering patriotic values. Our daily morning announcements feature "The Promise Song," which emphasizes patriotism and behavioral expectations for all students. Respect for the flag is a key aspect, and students are provided with a deep understanding of the reasons behind the earned respect.

Military students are encouraged to take the lead in sharing both the celebrations and challenges associated with being a military dependent. This inclusive environment ensures that every student feels valued and understood.

Student-Led Transition Team:

Our student council plays a vital role in the transition process, serving as student liaisons between students, teachers, and our team of administrators. Through these teams, students showcase their leadership skills by aiding in familiarizing military students with our campus, offering assistance, and providing a friendly ear to make the transition smoother.

Support for Military ESE Children:

We offer robust support for military children with exceptional needs. Our student-led transition teams and student council create a bridge between students, teachers, and administrators. They ensure that the unique needs of military ESE children are addressed, creating an inclusive and supportive environment.

Military Recognition Events:

At Southport Elementary, we actively participate in various military recognition events. These events include Purple Up Day, where we celebrate the strength and resilience of military children, as well as special ceremonies like the Veterans Day Flag Raising Ceremony and Patriot's Day Flag Raising Ceremony. These events instill a sense of patriotic pride in our school community.

Access to Mental Health Services:

Should a military student require mental health services, we offer several channels to obtain assistance. Initially, our outstanding on-campus mental health team is always prepared to listen and provide support in any way possible.

Additionally, we can promptly reach out to the district mental health team for additional support, ensuring that the mental well-being of our military children is a top priority.
